144Hz vs 240Hz: what should you choose?
Moving from 144Hz to 240Hz can make motion look smoother, but the difference is smaller than moving from a standard 60Hz display to 144Hz. Whether it is worth the extra cost depends on your games, frame rate and priorities.
What the numbers mean
A 144Hz display can refresh up to 144 times per second; a 240Hz display can refresh up to 240 times. Higher refresh rates can reduce the time between updates and make camera movement feel more immediate. They do not guarantee lower input lag or better motion clarity on their own.
When 240Hz makes sense
If you mostly play fast competitive games and your computer regularly renders well above 144 frames per second, 240Hz may be a worthwhile upgrade. A stable frame rate and a monitor with good response behaviour matter more than reaching the highest possible number in a menu.
For single-player games, slower-paced titles or a graphics card that typically renders below 144 frames per second, a 144Hz monitor may offer better value. A higher-resolution or better-quality panel could be a more visible improvement.
Decide with your whole setup in mind
Compare the full monitor, not only its refresh rate: resolution, panel quality, response measurements, adaptive sync, ports, stand and warranty. Keep game settings and your graphics card in the equation. If you are uncertain, choosing a good 144Hz or 165Hz screen leaves room in the budget for other parts of the setup.
